President Rody Duterte's State of the Nation Address (SONA) 2016

MANILA, Philippines – It’s going to be a full day at the Batasang Pambansa on Monday, July 25.

President Rodrigo Duterte is delivering his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) on this day, an anticipated event for the nation. Duterte won over 4 other presidential candidates, with 16 million voting for him in May.

President Rodrigo Duterte delivers his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 25, 2016, Monday at the Batasang Pambansa.

Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said Duterte's SONA speech will be "powerful" and "will awaken the patriot in every Filipino."

"It's nothing like any of the SONA speeches that we've heard before. This one will ask the nation, every citizen to march on and build the country. That's how it's like," Andanar said in a phone call by Inquirer.

"I don't want to exaggerate. But the first time I read the speech, it made me cry. That's how beautiful and heart-wrenching the President's speech is," he said.

Duterte, who wrote the speech himself, will deliver his message to the Filipino people for about 38 minutes.

SONA organizers said the traditional red carpet fashion show will no longer happen "in order to downplay the display of opulence criticized as insensitive and immoral by the public."

Those attending the SONA should wear business attire. Female guests would be prohibited from wearing gowns and other long dresses.
