Philippines - Bombings in Davao City

President Rodrigo Duterte declared a "state of lawless violence" in the Philippines hours after Friday night's deadly blast in Davao City, which killed 14 people and injured 67 others.

It was not the first time that a Presidet made such a declaration following a similar attack in the city.

Thirteen years ago, former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo declared a state of lawlessness following two explosions in the same city. Unlike Duterte's declaration, Arroyo's order was limited to Davao region only.

"The PNP is assuring the public that the situation is being handled carefully. A thorough investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the explosion and checkpoints/chokepoints were already established at all exit points in the city. We call on all the people to be vigilant at all times and report to the police any suspicious packages or persons. Please refrain from creating/passing misleading or unverified reports to avoid confusion and panic," Gaerlan said.

Presidential Communications Office Secretary Martin Andanar said President Rodrigo Duterte met with law enforcement and intel agencies in Davao City after the incident.
