Everybody knows that fast-food giant McDonald’s has a mascot named Ronald McDonald, but in Taiwan, there’s a “McDonald’s goddess” who is probably more popular than the smiley red-haired clown.
Wei Han Xu (徐薇涵), also known as Weiwei, or Haitun (海豚, which means “dolphin” in Chinese), rocketed to fame when a set of photos taken and uploaded by Taiwanese blogger
RainDog went viral. Taiwanese netizens were instantly smitten with Weiwei’s big, round eyes and sweet smile, and a frenzy reportedly broke out on the local forums as netizens scrambled to find out which McDonald’s outlet their newfound goddess worked at.
Move over, Ronald McDonald
She doesn’t dress like a clown, but she does doll herself up in a cartoonish maid motif in lieu of the chain’s customary baggy black polo and polyester pants.
In photos, the “McDonald’s Goddess” wears a black mini skirt and sexy matching high heels, or a pink-and-white Japanse maid cafe dress.
On a recent television appearance, WeiWei said her manager has complained about the fans who crowd the counter to snap her picture or chat her up. The manager gets particularly peeved when she is not working and disappointed customers leave without buying a thing.
The Taiwanese branches of McDonald’s are well known for hiring attractive women and encouraging them to dress up as maids, cheerleaders and sailors.
Fame has treated the doll-like WeiWei well.
She has appeared on numerous Taiwanese game shows and is happy to pose in pictures with adoring fans.
“I would like to say thank you to all the attentions,”
WeiWei wrote on Facebook. “Thank you so much to concern about me.”
